The Hong Kong Tourism Board launched its much-anticipated WinterFest on November 14, transforming the city into a dazzling Christmas wonderland.
For the first time, the annual event is staged in the Central District rather than its usual West Kowloon location. Tourism Board Chairman Peter Lam said the move was intended to attract more tourists and “stimulate the seasonal economy,” in a press release.
On opening day, large crowds of families and tourists gathered around a 20-metre-tall Christmas tree in Statue Square Garden. The tree, adorned with lights and ornaments, quickly became a popular photo spot and a symbol of the holiday spirit.
Terence Lee, a 34-year-old restaurant owner, said the tree was the highlight of the event. “I think this kind of festival is great. My kids think it’s cool and my wife enjoys taking pictures,” he said.

Three phases of celebration
This year’s WinterFest will unfold in three phases. The first, running until January 4, transformed Statue Square Garden into a festive “Christmas Town.” The second, starting on November 28, will feature an immersive light show with 3D animations projected onto surrounding buildings. The third, scheduled to begin at the end of November, will showcase a decorated footbridge at LANDMARK.
Christmas Town at Statue Square Garden
Since last week, Statue Square Garden has been filled with toy-themed decorations and shimmering ribbons. At its centre stands the 20‑metre tree, surrounded by 28 smaller trees in gold and red.
There are various picture spots at the venue. Visitors can also queue for free photos with Santa Claus until January.
A Christmas market will open on November 28, featuring 12 chalets selling seasonal gifts, workshops and festive treats. Live carol performances and surprise Santa visits are also available through the season.
Genie Wong, a 30‑year‑old visitor, said she was looking forward to the market. “I hope they have a perfume stall again this year. I really liked the one last year,” she said.

Starlight Boulevard on Charter Road
To extend the celebrations beyond Statue Square Garden, Charter Road will be transformed into a Starlight Boulevard, with 30 trees decorated with lights.
The pedestrian footbridge connecting Chater House will be adorned with glowing decorations and bells, while an illuminated Christmas tree will stand at the entrance to LANDMARK ATRIUM.
Immersive Light Show in Central
From 28 November, eight iconic buildings, including the Bank of China Tower, HSBC Main Building and the Court of Final Appeal, will form a giant canvas for the “Immersive Light Show in Central.”
The show will use 3D projection mapping and lighting effects to display festive images such as angels, snowmen and reindeer, accompanied by music. Animations will move across buildings and onto trees in the area as the city’s nightscapes come to life.
New Year’s Eve fireworks at Victoria Harbour
The festivities will culminate in a New Year’s Eve fireworks display over Victoria Harbour, bringing a close to the city’s celebrations.
