Bridging Artists and Communities

On Saturday night, the festival opened their annual reception party at PMQ, where art lovers, tourists, and artists gathered, creating a lively atmosphere. The hub was buzzing with workshops that invite visitors to engage in hands-on activities, helping to foster a deeper connection to the art.

The growing popularity of HKWALLS is evident as the festival evolves. “We are staying in Hong Kong for one week, and it’s wonderful to experience this artistic festival while we are here,” shared Christine Fenton, who is visiting with her family in Hong Kong on their second day. It’s surprising to see so many different artists from all over the world!”

The opening ceremony on Saturday started at 5pm, and people arrived at the queue one after another. To enhance the experience, HKWALLS facilitated live painting by artists on-site, allowing visitors to witness the creative process first-hand and participate in a vibrant visual display. This interactive approach aimed to deepen appreciation for the art and foster a connection between the artists and the audience.

The theme of this year is central with “Overlapping and Merging Life”. Exploring the beauty of nature’s transitions and showcases various plants and animals that, although distinct, connect to form a larger organism.

Introduced by one of the artists from Nara, Japan. “Just like stars that attract one another, living beings form dynamic relationships. As our environment evolves, so do our thoughts and feelings, revealing the beautiful nuances of human experience.”

A Decade of Artistic Transformation

HKWALLS, a non-profit arts organisation that focuses on creating opportunities for local and international artists to express their talent through street art and culture. What began as a grassroots initiative has grown into a global platform, bridging the gap between Hong Kong’s local art scene and the international street art community.

Jason Dembski shared insights into the organization’s mission:

“Street art is accessible and open to anyone. Sometimes people feel intimidated by the gallery scene, unsure of how to engage with the art. By creating street art, we invite everyone to participate.”

Initially, it was a challenge to gain public support for street art in Hong Kong. “Back in the beginning, it was hard to imagine why anyone would want to pay to paint a wall for a festival. But as continuity grew, we invited artists from across Asia and Europe, transforming HKWALLS into a vital platform for artistic collaboration.” Alexandra Unrein, the tour guide for HKWALLS recalls.

Interest in the festival has surged over the years, particularly after the pandemic. “When we first started offering tours in 2018, we had only a handful of participants. Now, the tours are fully booked, usually within a short period of time.”

In addition to the artworks across the city streets, art lovers can look forward to HKWALLS ROOMS, a unique collaboration that brings artists and galleries together in the pop-up exhibition at PMQ during Art Basel Week 2025.
