Celebrating over 300 Local Artists: Collect Hong Kong 2025

March is approaching its last few days, but the spirit of Hong Kong’s Art March is far from fading. The Collect Hong Kong 2025 art fair, a biennial event hosted by Hong Kong Arts Centre following the successful 2023 Collectible Art Fair, has just started in March 22 and will be open for free viewing from 10a.m. to 8p.m. until April 4th.

Featuring emerging and established artists from partnering art institutions, Collect Hong Kong showcases innovative artworks selected by a curator and a jury panel. Everyone is sure to find something that suits their taste among the 350+ items in a wide range of media.

Stepping into the Hong Kong Arts Centre in Wan Chai, visitors are greeted with a unique interior designed to take them across the displayed artwork. The exhibition spans from the ground floor up to the third floor of the Jockey Club Atrium, the Pao Galleries on the fourth and fifth floor, and The Showcase on the 15th floor.

The variety of works is definitely a point to look out for as 301 artists are featured in this year’s fair. There were 627 submissions of art pieces, which is double the entries since 2023. Paintings, sculpture, ceramics, and photography are just some of the different works visitors can enjoy.

“There are some really interesting ones. It’s hard to choose. We certainly like a few of the cat-related art. We’re cat people, so they’re quite cute. The variety is also very good,” said Edmond, who visited with his wife to check out his friend’s artwork that was displayed.

“I think there’s a lot of diversity. Some of them were quite impressive, especially the statue or the sculpture,” remarked Wei Chan, a frequent gallery visitor who loves the accessible art scene Hong Kong offers. “So many galleries in Hong Kong are free of charge. Also, there’s a lot of art things going on right now.”

Collect Hong Kong 2025 is the only major art event hosted during Art March that focuses solely on local artists. During a press release, Mr. Peter Lay, Chairman of the Board of Governors at the Hong Kong Arts Centre, said, “In the past, March art events primarily spotlighted overseas artists. This exhibition flips the focus back onto Hong Kong’s vibrant local scene, helping it to flourish.”

The booklet available throughout the exhibition provides an alphabetical list of all the artists and their works, numbered according to the labels beside each artwork, making it easy to refer to the artist and title. Visitors can conveniently scan the QR codes around the venue to purchase pieces, with the prices also listed in the booklet to streamline the process. In addition, junior museum tour guides are making an appearance again to foster artistic dialogue with a fresh perspective.

Other opportunities to explore art are the talks and workshops that aim to introduce local art development to the public. For example, Create Corner, held on March 23rd, 29th, and 30th, is an activity where artists like Tansy Kan, Kayla Ang, Carmen Poon, and Silver Qian lead participants in handcrafting art pieces. Anyone can sign up to this and many other events through the website, all free-of-charge.
